This year’s competition attracted around 750 participants from 90 institutions nationwide, competing in Algebra and Calculus. The high school division took place online from March 8–9, while the university-level contest was held in person from April 1–5.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Doan Trung Cuong, Vice President of the Vietnam Mathematical Society, the National Mathematics Olympiad was first held in 1993 with the participation of only three universities. Since then, it has become an annual event with a steadily growing number of institutions involved. The 31st edition was among the largest ever, with over 90 university teams competing.

Following several days of intense competition, the organizers announced the award winners. EIU students Pham Nhu Y and Pham Phuong Thanh, under the guidance of their university lecturers, proudly earned bronze medals in the student division. Nhu Y received a Bronze Medal in Algebra, while Phuong Thanh took home a Bronze in Calculus. Notably, both medalists are from EIU’s School of Engineering.

Mr. Le Nguyen Viet Tuong, lecturer from the School of General Education and the students’ coach, shared: “The National Student Mathematics Olympiad is a major academic platform for students and pupils across the country who share a passion for mathematics. This year’s contest saw diverse participation from 90 universities and academies representing a wide range of disciplines—from science and technology to education, healthcare, economics, military, and public security. It highlights mathematics as a vital science that plays a key role in supporting research, application, and development across other fields.”

“As first-time participants, EIU students still have much room to grow in terms of knowledge and experience. However, they embraced the challenge with determination, motivated by personal pride and a desire to represent the university well. Our team is committed to more rigorous preparation in the coming year, aiming for even greater achievements,” emphasized Mr. Viet Tuong.
